Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw Gala to showcase Indigenous artists, in support of Indigenous Students

Stewart McKelveyFREDERICTON – Internationally-renowned hoop dancer James Jones will be among the Indigenous artists showcased at Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw, a gala evening in support of the New Brunswick Community College (ɧ»¢tv) Indigenous Student Bursary Fund. Gelu’lg (Gel-uulk) Maw-a-paw (Mow-a-baw) means “awesome gathering” in the Mi’kmaq (Gelu’lg) and Wolastoqiyik (Maw-a-paw) languages. 

“Bringing together traditional Indigenous hoop dancing and contemporary urban dance, James Jones’ unique and high-energy performances are a perfect fit for this ‘awesome gathering,’” said Suzanne Desrosiers, Vice President Employee and Student Development at ɧ»¢tv. 

A finalist on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Jones has performed with artists such as k-os and Snoop Dogg. He has toured the world with Juno award-winning group A Tribe Called Red.

Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw will also feature Indigenous visual and performing artists from across New Brunswick. The full lineup will be announced later this fall.

“ɧ»¢tv is committed to welcoming more Indigenous learners to our College,” said Desrosiers. “This evening will be a wonderful celebration of Indigenous culture while at the same time raising funds to create more opportunities for Indigenous learners.”
